TIK TOK BUCKS TREND WITH MALE NURSERY ASSISTANT

Tik Tok is excited to be taking on a new Apprentice, 18 year old James Bowman, as their only male Nursery Assistant and a statistics bucking recruit for a UK nursery.

Education experts have warned that the childcare and education profession is 'fast becoming an exclusively female preserve'. Currently, only around 50 men above the age of 25 work in nurseries and new figures from the General Teaching Council show no younger men (below the age of 25) are working in nursery schools.

Kate House, chair of the Tik Tok parents group and mother of two children at the nursery commented "both Tik Tok boys and girls will benefit from the experience of having a male role model."

This appointment comes at a time when the experts and the media are highlighting the ever increasing breakdown of the family unit, children growing up in a single parent familes. Male preschool assistants can often be stable and reliable figures in the lives of the children that they care for.

James gained his interest in childcare from his parents – his mum works in children's education and his Dad is a football coach for under 21's. James aims to gain his level three child care qualification whilst working at Tik Tok, meeting early the proposed government standard in Early Learning and Childcare which is a requirement by 2015.

Beverley Cook, the Nursery Manager said "Men have a different skillset to offer our children and having James in the nursery will help provide good male role model. We can't wait for James to join us in April."

James is also a qualified football coach for under 7's and plans to start offering additional football lessons for the children.

Sir Alan Sugar is currently appearing on TV advertising for Apprenticeships offered by the Learning and Skills Council, with the strapline "Make Things Happen".
